'M3GAN' Is A Modernized 'Child's Play' Remake... And It's Really Good

M3GAN is the modernized remake of Child's Play we've all been waiting for...

M3GAN revolves around a little girl named “Katie” whose parents are killed in a car accident in the first scene of the movie. After recovering in the hospital from her own injuries, the little girl goes to live with her aunt, who works as a toy inventor for Hasbro’s biggest competitor.

Katie has trouble adjusting to this new world she’s living in without her parents, and just as it seems like all hope is lost for this little girl’s future, her aunt “Gemma” finishes the design prototype of Funki’s (the toy company she works for) newest creation, M3GAN, a 21st century AI toy that can carry out full, life-like conversations with its users.

The titular character starts out almost touchingly, saving Katie from a potentially depressing rest of her life and we witness her artificial-mind become seemingly quite fond, protective, and even genuinely caring of her new playmate Katie; but then the doll takes a very dark turn at the end of the first act, when the doll murders Aunt Gemma’s neighbor’s dog after witnessing the dog biting Katie.

After the first act, tension builds quickly throughout the rest of the movie, keeping your eyes wide open and locked on the screen, your body leaning out of your seat, anxious to find out how much more evil this AI doll is going to become.

The story of this movie is quite simple, and therefore allows its audience to immerse themselves into a world where an AI is truly capable of anything, regardless of how dark or evil it may be.

The characters and their relationships with each other are quite dynamic, particularly Gemma and her niece Katie, which is rocky throughout the film but satisfyingly resolves by the end of the movie.

This movie is highly entertaining, and even quite thrilling and scary at times. It modernizes the Child’s Play movies quite well, and actually may even be better in ways, and certainly more realistic. Drawing on some themes from The Terminator, this film almost serves as a warning to us about the future of AI, and what could happen if an AI-being were to become too aware of itself and too smart, which may give you a feeling of uneasiness that Child’s Play really never could.

Judging the characters, story, themes, acting, and cinematography of the film, we at EndingPolitics.com give M3GAN thumbs up and 3 out of 4 stars. This film will certainly make for a great date night with your significant other – and perhaps even a nice night out with your family, if your kids are mature enough, but don’t bring the really little ones.
